Rothy’s Shoe Review

Do you remember my no shopping challenge for the month of June? If you haven’t read it you can check it out here. Well while I was going through that month I realized that I really needed new work shoes. Due to the surgery I had on my foot a few years ago, I pretty much only wear flats (with my custom orthotics). Sadly I haven’t worn heels in years. I still have my favorite pairs in my closet staring at me every time I open the doors, how sad.

Anyway, I decided that when my now shopping challenge was over, I needed to buy new shoes for work. I realized I had been wearing the same few pairs of flats for over 3 years. They help up pretty well, but they needed to replaced.

If you read my Favorite Podcasts posts, you know that I really love Young House Love. I was listening to their podcast on one of my flights for work and I heard Sherry mention these specific flats that she had been loving, Rothy’s. I wrote down the name in my notes on my phone, so that I could check them out later. Well I checked them out and, they are not cheap. So I got to Googling to see what other people really thought of them. It turned out most people liked them. However, you can only buy them online, so I wasn’t sure about buying them because how do you know if they fit?

Well I found another post and I there was a $20 coupon code, so I figured why not try them. They offered free return shipping if they didn’t work. I have to be careful with shoes that I buy because they have to work with my orthotics.

They are offer three different styles: the flat, the point, and the loafer.

I decide to do one flat and one point, although the loafers are soo cute! They have some really awesome color selections too, but I decided to stick with neutrals for my first order.

I got the flat in “Flax Birdseed”

and the point in the “Cobalt Solid”

I decided to go with an 8.5 in the flat and a 9 in the point. For me, I think this was a good idea. I usually wear an 8.5 but you never know and I didn’t want my toes scrunched up in the point. Although the fabric is quite soft an 8.5 maybe would have worked. The 9 fits fine though!

One of the great things about these shoes is that you can wash them, that’s right the insole as well as the entire shoe can be washed. You just take the insole out and throw the insole and the shoe in the washing machine in cold water (do not use hot water). I have yet to try to wash them, but I’m pretty excited about it. I’ll report back on how they hold up after washing, but I’ve read that they hold up really well!

This leads me to the other reason why I like these shoes. I always wear those little no-show socks and they ALWAYS slide off my heel. Who else does this happen to? Because of my orthotics I can’t go barefoot, and going barefoot in regular shoes makes my feet sweaty. I wasn’t sure how I was going to tackle this problem with these new shoes. I tried putting the insole overtop of my orthotic (since you can wash the insole) but it wasn’t wide enough and bothered my arch. My friend suggested something genius to me. I put the sock over the insole, and then the front of my foot is just on the insole. It really was a great idea, and my feet don’t really seem to sweat inside these shoes which is great. However, if they do, time to just wash them! So if you don’t have orthotics I really think these shoes would be great because no more socks slipping down!

I do think they are really comfortable, but I wouldn’t say they are as comfortable as tennis shoes (which some people claim). There’s also zero arch support, unless you add some like I have to, but this is pretty common of most flats. They look nice, and I think the point can really be dressed up if you wanted to, but they can also look so cute with jeans! Both pair are quite versatile, and for the four weeks that I’ve had them I’ve pretty much alternated between the two different pair everyday.

The other really cool thing about them is that they are made out of recycled water bottles, how cool is that?! Which leads me to say, they really are comfortable and soft. The sides are not hard like some shoes, and you really wouldn’t expect that they are made from plastic.

So what is my opinion? Should you buy them?

So far I love mine, but they are really expensive. I think if you want to invest in a pair of flats to wear a lot and don’t mind spending the money, go for it. Otherwise, stick to buying cheaper shoes and replacing them more often! That’s my two cents. If you do want to try them I can send you a $20 off discount code that you can use. You can find the link to the discount HERE.

UPDATE: I’ve had my Rothy’s shoes for almost two months now. I did wash my shoes in the washing machine, in cold water on the hand wash cycle. I took the insoles out of the shoes first. I always use a gentle detergent, and I laid them flat on my drying rack to dry. They held up amazingly well, and kept their shape and everything. They do have care instructions that I will link HERE.

Our shoes are entirely machine washable in cold water. Just remove the insoles prior to washing and throw them in the washing machine with your shoes. Wash on a cold, delicate setting with mild detergent. Leave them to air dry. And just a reminder: any heat will cause Rothy’s to shrink and lose shape, so make sure to never wash with warm water or put them in the dryer.

As long as you follow the care instructions I see no reason why they won’t last. It’s pretty awesome to be able to throw your shoes in the wash when they smell or get dirty!
